Why pine weevil is a restocking problem
The large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis) is a leading cause of tree mortality in Europe. It girdles young stems in the first seasons after restocking, and a girdled seedling does not recover.
Knowing where the population is greatest, in real time and across a dispersed estate, is the part current practice cannot do.

What pine weevil damage costs

High tree mortality

Cost of replacing trees

Excessive time spent monitoring weevils

High pesticide use
Spotta's Solution
Early warning system for Large Pine Weevil in forests
Developed in partnership with the Scottish Government, the system lets foresters detect large pine weevil remotely.
A network of monitors attracts and identifies weevils, and activity appears on the dashboard in real time, mapped to the compartment it came from.
It runs on the same smart pest monitoring platform Spotta deploys in hospitality and agriculture.
See how it works.

What Forestry Teams Get From It

Track weevil emergence in real time

Take action sooner and more precisely

Improve tree survival
Spotta’s system is proven 8x more sensitive than billet monitoring, with significantly less labour. It is robust outdoors, cost-effective at estate scale, and serviced once a year.
Trial background is covered in our write-up of the Forest Pod trials with Forestry and Land Scotland.

Spotta’s system is currently available for deployment throughout Europe
If you are restocking at scale and carrying losses you cannot currently predict, a demonstration is the fastest way to judge the data. Book a demo with the Spotta team.
Forestry contractors and technology distributors can deliver the system to their own clients through our partner program. Related reading sits under forestry pest monitoring.
Pine Weevil Monitoring Questions
The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis, which is the principal restocking pest across European conifer forestry.
White pine weevil (Pissodes strobi) is a different insect, found in North America, which attacks the leaders of established young trees rather than girdling new seedlings. Our current forestry system targets Hylobius abietis in Europe, though the platform can be configured for other species.
Once a year. Between services the monitors run unattended and report automatically.
No. The monitors carry their own power and wireless communications, which is what makes remote compartments practical.
It depends on the size and layout of the restock area and how granular a picture you need. We size deployments with your team.
