The large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis) is a leading cause of tree mortality in Europe. It girdles young stems in the first seasons after restocking, and a girdled seedling does not recover.

Knowing where the population is greatest, in real time and across a dispersed estate, is the part current practice cannot do.

If you are restocking at scale and carrying losses you cannot currently predict, a demonstration is the fastest way to judge the data. Book a demo with the Spotta team.

Forestry contractors and technology distributors can deliver the system to their own clients through our partner program. Related reading sits under forestry pest monitoring.

Pine Weevil Monitoring Questions

  • The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis, which is the principal restocking pest across European conifer forestry.

  • White pine weevil (Pissodes strobi) is a different insect, found in North America, which attacks the leaders of established young trees rather than girdling new seedlings. Our current forestry system targets Hylobius abietis in Europe, though the platform can be configured for other species.

  • Once a year. Between services the monitors run unattended and report automatically.

  • No. The monitors carry their own power and wireless communications, which is what makes remote compartments practical.

  • It depends on the size and layout of the restock area and how granular a picture you need. We size deployments with your team.
